Got oil on metal, small parts or other surfaces? Need
laboratory analysis?
Sitelab's UVF analyzers can be used to quickly measure
concentrations of oil coated on steel, aluminum and other metals
across a broad range of manufacturing industries. This includes
parts and components used in automotive, HVAC, food, medical,
pharmaceuticals or to monitor environmental remediation efforts
from spills or accidents.
Lubricating oils are often used to prevent corrosion or
assist with the production process. Residual oils remaining
after the cleaning process can cause problems. Testing parts or
surfaces to ensure they are clean and oil free is important for
quality control.
Small parts or surface wipes using gauze pads are extracted in
hexane solvent and tested for hydrocarbon content. The
equipment is easy to use and results only take about 5 minutes.
For best performance, use the oil from your site to calibrate
the UVF analyzer. If the
oil is not available, test samples for EDRO or other calibrations
suitable for analysis. You can also ship your oil to
Sitelab and we'll factory calibrate the analyzer for you.

Sitelab's UVF-Trilogy analyzer with EDRO UV
Module (below) detects hydrocarbons in the diesel and oil range and
is most often used for oil on metal applications.
|
UV fluorescence methods detect aromatic hydrocarbons
only and are not
sensitive to aliphatic hydrorcarbons. Most oils
used in manufacturing are mineral oil-based, which exract well
in hexane but contain a low
aromatic content. As a result, when using the oil to calibrate,
detection limits are higher compared to using Sitelab's EDRO
standard. The minimum detection limit in most oils is less than 1 ppm.
Water soluable oils perform better using methanol for analysis
compared to hexane. The same procedures and materials can be
used for analysis.

OIL ON STEEL
PRESSURE VALVES
Worthington Cylinders (Columbus, Ohio) manufacturers steel pressure
valves, which are coated with a special oil to lubricate the threads
after they’re made. Too
much or too little oil can make them hard to turn.
Quality control engineers submitted samples to Sitelab for
hydrocarbon analysis to determine how much oil to use to improve the
performance of their product.
Customer uses KeyKote oil, made by MacDermid, Inc., which contains a
mixture of petroleum distillates, glycol ether and other
ingredients. The
aromatic hydrocarbons in the oil fluoresces strongly using Sitelab’s
UVF-Trilogy instrument allowing it to detect very low
concentrations.

CASE STUDY WITH PERFORMANCE DATA
|
Samples were extracted in 20 mL hexane using 8 oz. glass jars
and measured
on the UVF-Trilogy EDRO analyzer calibrated to the oil.
Data was used to determine the
optimum content of oil to meet their specifications. |

APPLICATIONS TESTING MEDICAL PARTS
& HVAC COMPONENTS
|
Metal samples are extracted in solvent and measured on Sitelab's
UVF analyzers. Concentrations of oil
are in ppm
units. Test results can
be converted to mg/sq-meter if the surface area is known, which
is often required for certain applications.
Examples shown here include testing oxygen pump components,
parts used to make heart valves and surface wipes testing hospital
ventilation air ducts.
Sitelab's UVF-Trilogy and
UVF-500D models replaced the older UVF-3100 and TD-500D used in this
study.

FLUORESCENT
PENETRANT OILS
A medical implant manufacturer uses fluorescent penetrant oils to
coat their parts during the manufacturing process. The parts
must be oil-free when the parts are cleaned for resale. Photos
below are from pilot study performed.
|
|
This type of
oil flouresces very strongly and can be detected using Sitelab's
portable UVF-500D analyzer with detection limits as low as 10 ppb.
Residual oil on the screws and solvent extracts are easily visible
under a UV black light. |
