Performance Testing
TPH in Water:
Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons is a test common to the oil industry to measure the
concentrations of crude oils, lubricating oils and waste oils in
water. Sitelab
used hexane to extract sample. This solvent is suitable for
both light and heavy oils. Hexane is same solvent used by the
laboratory methods.
The sample was spiked
with vacuum pump oil. This oil was provided
by ERA to calibrate the analyzer for accurate TPH measurement.
Sitelab results correlated well to EPA Methods 1664 by Gravimetric
and 418.1 by Infrared.
31 laboratories
participated in this proficiency study.
Sitelab's TPH OIL Calibration Kit CAL-057
produced lower readings. It contains more aromatics than
vacuum pump oil. Lubricating
oils contain high proportions of aliphatics, which do not fluorece.
For most oil in water
applications, the source oil is available and can be used to make a
calibration standard.
