Test PAHs or Benzo[a]Pyrene using Sitelab
Analyzers
Coal tars contain high concentrations of polycyclic aromatic
hydrocarbons (PAHs) and are found in reclaimed asphalts,
pavement sealcoating products, creosotes used on utility poles and
railroad ties and soils contaminated from Manufactured Gas Plant
(MGP) sites. Benzo[a]Pyrene (BaP) is very toxic
compound and is regulated in the UK's asphalt industry, where
coal tars were once used to make asphalt pavement long ago.
Today, the tar is milled from roads and highways
and mixed with new asphalt binder for resuse.
BaP concentrations in reclaimed or recycled asphalts must be
below 50 ppm mg/Kg to meet the
UK's regulatory waste limits. Sitelab's UVF-500D and
UVF-Trilogy fluorescence analyzers are both suitable for testing
PAHs or BaP in coal tar contaminants and are highly sensitive to
these compounds, with detection limits in the low ppb range.
Sample test kits and calibration standards available are
compitable with both models. Samples are extracted in
methanol solvent for analysis performed on-site or in the
laboratory. These devices are is easy to use.
No training or maintenance is required.

ADEPT UK, Reclaimed Asphalt Regulations:
Guidelines specified by the Association of Directors of Environment,
Economy, Planning & Transport (ADEPT), for managing reclaimed
asphalt in the United Kingdom, now permit UV flourescence-based
instruments to be used for PAH screening purposes.
Sitelab's methods, products and procedures were developed to meet
ADEPT's specifications as a Rapid Monitoring Technique (RMT)
screening method. Use Sitelab's portable UVF analyzers to
determine if asphalts contain Benzo[a]Pyrene above or below ADEPT's
50 ppm and 25 ppm action limits. For more details about ADEPT
and UK Environment Agency's coal tar regulations, see links below:

Test PAHs in Coal Tar Contaminated Soils & Other Samples:
Sitelab's UVF-500D and UVF-Trilogy analyzers can be calibrated to
measure PAHs - as the sum of EPA's 16 regulated compounds - using
Sitelab PAH calibration kits available.
These products contain ready-to-use,
certified standards in methanol, supplied with a 6-month expiration
date and Certificate of Analysis. See calibration instructions
for details.
Use for coal tar sites
where Total PAH analysis is required. Samples are prepared
using the same test kit used for Benzo[a]Pyrene analysis, part no.
EXTR010-20-PAHS, and is used with both UVF analyzers.
Results correlate well to laboratory GC/MS methods.
Ideal for screening PAH concentrations in parking lot sealcoats to
meet the 1,000 mg/Kg or 10,000 mg/Kg PAH action limits, where
regulated. See link below for details:
